City DirectoriesCity directories, often overlooked as a source of genealogy information, have been around for almost as long as there have been cities. Different from telephone directories in that they list by address where a person lived and worked, city directories are used by working backwards from the most recent date of occupancy at an address. An individuals occupation may change, the family may take in renters, or they may move to another part of town. By starting with the most recent directory and working backwards, you can sometimes build a picture of an ancestors living circumstances which can be found nowhere else. "City directories also list names and addresses of asylums, cemeteries, churches, fraternal organizations, hospitals, insurance companies, newspapers, railroads, and schools. City maps, with ward boundaries, are sometimes included. When the names of a street changed, the next year's directory listed the change-an important aid when trying to prove that a family is the same family despite a different address."
